Safer Handling of Children - Basic awareness or refresher – Delivered by Herts Handling Training Ltd

This course will focus on the particular issues that may arise in the paediatric setting, but the use of mechanical aids such as a hoist will not be covered.

Introduces the problems associated with caring for children and young people needing assistance with moving and offers the opportunity to practice up to date techniques and explore strategies for the safer handling of children and young people. 

By the end of the course, participants will have: 

• reviewed spinal anatomy and biomechanics to enable staff to understand the importance of back care in the workplace and in all aspects of daily life 
• discussed appropriate legislation and, where relevant codes of practice, and their relevance to the assessment of children and young people needing assistance when moving or being moved 
• considered the dangers of unsafe methods to children, young people and staff 
• discussed and participated in a range of current techniques and strategies for working with children and young people requiring assistance with mobility 
• explored various unexpected situations and considered solutions to problems such as falling and dealing with a fallen child

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 came into force in January 1993. This legislation places a duty on employers to implement measures to reduce the risks to the staff who are required to undertake manual handling tasks. This course is designed to increase staff awareness of the possible injuries to themselves and to enable them to carry out transfer operations safely.
