Starting School: Supporting Special Educational Needs in the reception year

The transition into the first year of school is a significant milestone for all children, but for those with SEND, it can present additional challenges for staff and pupils. 

This course is an opportunity to reflect on and explore best practice when supporting children with SEND in their first year at school. 

This session covers:  

• understanding SEND in the Early Years Foundation Stage  
• statutory responsibilities  
• High-Quality First Teaching and Ordinarily Available Provision  
• targeted SEND strategies  
• working with parents and professionals  
• provision and interventions  
• creating an inclusive environment  
• opportunity to reflect and troubleshoot  

By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 

• develop a deeper understanding of SEND within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), including common needs and how they may present in the first year of school  
• apply principles of High-Quality First Teaching and Ordinarily Available Provision, ensuring inclusive classroom practice that supports all learners  
• identify and implement targeted strategies and interventions to support children with a range of SEND needs effectively
• create and sustain an inclusive, welcoming learning environment that reduces barriers to participation and promotes positive outcomes for all pupils
• reflect on current practice and problem-solve challenges together
