About this walk

This walk starts at Mile Oak Farm – a family run farm on the South Downs on the western side of Brighton & Hove.  

There is a farm shop, café and toilet at the farmyard, where there are grazing donkeys and horses in the surrounding fields. The walk follows farm tracks and field paths out to the South Downs Way (100 mile National Trail from Winchester to Eastbourne), at Edburton Hill where there are extensive views across the Downs and out to the Weald beyond.   

The earthworks here are remains of a Motte & Bailey Castle (medieval fortifications introduced by the Normans 1066 – a large conical mound, which would have had a palisade on top and a stone or timber tower).

Directions

Bus numbers 1x, 55 at Chrisdory Road stop 

  1. From the bus stop head towards the Downs, under the bypass and then into Mileoak Farm. Continue straight ahead along the track, ignore the bridleway track to the right and continue straight, following the track.
  2. The track bends to the right anf the the left. The trcak then forks - take the right fork heading north, with a hedge to your right.
  3. Continue straight to a gate - pass through it into a grass field. Follow the bridleway to the left, through the middle of the field until you get to another gate, go through this gate and follow the track along the bottom of an escarpment and the side of a field.
  4. Continue on this path, through another gate and follow the grassy field path alongside a fence to the left.
  5. At the gate onto the South Downs Way main track turn right and constinue along the South Downs Way.
  6. At the next junction continue straight on the South Downs Way until you get to a signpost on the right for a footpath. Take this right and continue down to a gate, go through the gate and follow the track (Sussex Border Path) .
  7. Where the main track divides, take the right hand track back towards Mile Oak Farm.
  8. Follow this track, through two gates. At the bottom of the hill turn left along the valley bottom towards the farm buildings.
  9. Go back under the underpass to retrace your steps to the bus stop.
