Improving energy efficiency and boosting supply of temporary accommodation

We’ve launched a new scheme to increase our supply of temporary accommodation while improving the energy efficiency of private rented sector homes across Brighton & Hove.  

The Energy Performance Grant Scheme for Landlords offers grants of up to £7,500 to eligible landlords who commit to completing work on their property to bring it up to a minimum Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of C and enter into a 3-year lease with the council for temporary accommodation.

Eligibility 

This is a pilot scheme that is open to landlords with properties in Brighton & Hove with energy ratings of D and below.  

To be eligible for the scheme, landlords must commit to completing energy efficiency improvements to bring the homes up to EPC C or above and agree to sign a 3-year lease with the council upon completion of agreed works and passing a property inspection.  

Grant funding will be released as soon as the 3-year lease is signed. If the lease is ended before the end of the 3-year term, the grant money will be repayable to the council. 

Landlords will be eligible to receive funding through the Energy Performance Grant Scheme for Landlords with up to 3 properties.

Councillor Gill Williams, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Brighton & Hove is experiencing an acute housing crisis, with rising levels of homelessness leading to increased demand for temporary and emergency accommodation.  

“The Energy Performance Grant Scheme for Landlords will enable us to increase our supply of temporary accommodation, while also improving the quality of private rented sector homes in the city.

How to apply 

You will need to complete a short Registration of Interest form to apply for the Energy Performance Scheme for Landlords.  

This is the first step in the process and allows us to check whether your property is suitable. If your property is eligible for the scheme, you will then be invited to submit a full application.
