Bank holiday changes to council services
Local GCSE results show improvement in English and Maths for 2026
Provisional GCSE results for Brighton & Hove show 69% of GCSE students achieving combined English and Maths at grades 4 and above. This is an increase in last year’s figure of 67% when results are broadly static nationally.
Congratulations
Councillor Emma Daniel, Cabinet member for Children, Families and Youth Services, said: “Congratulations to all our students who received GCSE results today. I know how hard you worked to get here, and you should feel incredibly proud of this achievement.
“I’d also like to thank the teachers and school staff across the city who supported their pupils throughout this process, alongside the parents, carers, families and communities who continued that support at home.
“Finishing secondary school is about more than just grades and results, so I also want to acknowledge everything our young people have achieved outside of the classroom this year.
“Any students that need additional support or advice today are encouraged to speak to our Youth Employability Service – you can get in touch by telephone, on social media, or in person at the Youth Employment Hub.”
Celebrating success
The chair of the city’s secondary headteacher group, John McKee, said: “Secondary Headteachers across Brighton & Hove are writing jointly to celebrate the achievements of our students and recognise the hard work, determination and resilience that has brought them to this point.
“As a city, we believe every young person is a city child, and that every child’s success matters to us all. Today’s results reflect the achievements of individual students and the dedication of the staff, families and communities who support them.
“We also recognise that every school serves a unique community, with different cohorts of young people bringing their own experiences, strengths and challenges. Results are only one part of the story of a school and the young people within it.
“Our shared commitment is to celebrate success wherever it is found, learn from one another and continue working together to ensure that every city child has the opportunity to thrive.
“We are incredibly proud of all our students, congratulate them on their achievements and wish them every success for the future.”
