Brighton & Hove City Mortuary provides postmortem services as well as a secure, temporary resting place when a death is reported to the Coroner.
These deaths are often sudden and unexpected, natural or unnatural. The City Mortuary also provides facilities for forensic postmortems and high-risk postmortems.
The City Mortuary staff work closely with the HM Coroner for West Sussex, Brighton and Hove, the HM Coroner for East Sussex, Sussex Police and the NHS.
Our compassionate mortuary team will keep your loved ones safe and ensure they are treated with dignity and respect throughout.
The mortuary is in the Extra Mural cemetery. The entrance gates are located between Newmarket Road and Gladstone Place. It is staffed between 7am to 3pm, Monday to Thursday, and 7am to midday on Friday.
There is a Chapel of Rest within the public area of the mortuary, allowing family and friends to view the deceased.
Viewings are strictly by prior appointment only. Contact the mortuary by phone or email to arrange a visit.
Each appointment is allocated 30 minutes. In some instances, it may not be possible to view the deceased until after the postmortem examination has been completed.
